In 1912, Datong College was established in Shanghai and Hu Dun re-elected as dean. In 1922, approved by the Beiyang government , the college was renamed Datong University . This was the first private university founded by the Republic of China . In 1926, Hu Dun returned to Beijing to serve as the president of Beijing Women's University . He also presided over the administration of Datong University . In 1927, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Science at Beiyang University . He soon resigned to Shanghai and succeeded the president of Datong University . [1] From 1930 to 1935, he served as the director of the Department of Mathematics at the School of Science , Jiaotong University . [2] By 1930, the campus area of ​​Datong University had been expanded to more than 100 acres, and construction has continued to increase. After the August 13th Incident , the university set up a new school building in Shanghai's Xinzha Road , and added an affiliated secondary school and a second school (ie, Middle School and High School). [1]
In July 1935, the Chinese Mathematical Society was established in Shanghai. He served as the chairman of the first session of the board of directors until 1948. [5]
In 1937, the Japanese bombed Nanshi . Datong University’s school building was blown up and the school moved into the concession. Later, the Japanese occupation of the concession, Hu Dunfu continued to adhere to school. [3]
After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression , the First Affiliated High School of Datong University moved back to Nanshi and became the later Datong Middle School . [3]
Just before the Chinese People's Liberation Army occupied Shanghai, Hu Dun went back to Taiwan . In Taiwan, he attempted to restore Datong University but failed. Later, he went to the United States as a visiting professor at the University of Washington . [1]
On December 1, 1978, Hu Dunfu passed away at the age of 92. [1]
